Biography

Elaine Bass is an American title designer and filmmaker. She was married too and worked with Saul Bass for over 40 years.

Elaine worked on title sequences for movies including Spartacus (1960), West Side Story (1961), Something Wild (1962), and several more in the 20th century.

Saul Bass was notably known for his design of film posters and title sequences, using his graphic design and film making skills.

Bass worked with some of Hollywood's greatest directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, and Martin Scorsese, during the course of his 40-year career. Since producing the title sequence for Otto Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm in 1955, he became well-known in the film industry. Bass created successful and unforgettable title sequences for Alfred Hitchcock's films North by Northwest, Vertigo (with John Whitney), and Psycho, inventing a new form of dynamic typography. Bass also created some of North America's most recognisable corporate logos, including AT&T's first "bell" logo from 1969 and their subsequent "globe" logo from 1983. He also created the “jetstream” logo for Continental Airlines in 1968 and the “tulip” logo for United Airlines in 1974, which have become some of the most well-known logos of the period.
